BREAKING NEWS - President Robert Mugabe Finally Resigns
Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned after 37 years as leader of the southern African nation, finally succumbing to the pressure of a military takeover and the humiliation of impeachment.
The announcement came minutes into a joint session of the Zimbabwean Parliament in Harare, convened to prise the 93-year-old from power.
93-year-old Robert Mugabe, who was expected to resign in a televised speech on Sunday night – but he left Zimbabweans stunned and avoided any mention of resignation during his rambling address, has finally succumbed to pressure of resigning, ending his 37 years in power.
In his official resignation statement he said: "I Robert Gabriel Mugabe hereby formally tender my resignation as President of Zimbabwe with immediate effect".
MetroUK reports that wild celebrations was said to have broken out in parliament as impeachment proceedings were called to a close, the parliament’s speaker announced.
